Presentation Title: UAS Applications to Advance Environmental Monitoring and Environmental Studies

Presenter: Prof. Jae Ryu, University of Idaho

Abstract:

Drought continues to threaten the sustainability of watershed at the urban-rural interface in a changing climate. One major limitation for local stakeholders such as water managers, farmers, agribusiness personnel, and policy makers in estimating water availability in planning for mitigation of drought impacts is a lack of clear understanding of the currently evolving drought condition as well as capability to estimate more accurate water supply for the growing season. The proposed research, therefore, seeks to fill this gap by enhancing drought monitoring using Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)’s data products along with a UAS-based new drought index to better monitor and to manage drought for irrigated agriculture and environmental studies. The STEM education activities using UAS are also highlighted during the talk.
