Title: Multiscale Approach toward Advanced Materials and Resilient Infrastructures

Presenter: Prof. Yong-Rak Kim at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Abstract

In this talk, I present a multiscale approach for advanced materials and more resilient/durable civil infrastructures. Different length scales (nano, micro, meso, and macro) are considered to characterize fundamental properties and behavior at each scale, and then information at different scales are linked. The multiscale approach can be applied to analysis, modeling, and design of various different materials and structures that are complex due to multiple loads and multiphysical aspects associated. The research method is detailed with an example that targeted fundamental mechanisms to understand how chemical curing-aging of binding materials occurs and effects of small scale material-level information on core engineering properties and performance behavior of mixtures and structures.
